The Diet
I’m not following any specific diet, at least not one as recommended by any diet book or guru.
I am, however, a creature of habit and fond of taking the path of least effort. To that end, I’ve been more or less eating the same thing on work days, and being more liberal on the weekends.
Lacking an official name, I’ll simply call is Chicken, Beans, and Onions, or CBO for short.
The ingredients:
- 4 frozen chicken breasts
- 1 bag frozen green beans or brocolli (I tend to alternate)
- 1 can low sodium black beans
- 1/2 large red or white onion, sliced
The preparation:
- Defrost the chicken in the microwave, then thin slice it once it’s soft
- Combine the chicken with 3 -4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan, some low-sodium soy sauce, and stir fry until it’s cooked
- Dump in the frozen green beans or brocolli, the can of black beans, and the red or white onion
- Leave heat on for a minute or two, stirring occassionally, then remove from heat and leave covered until it cools
- Sometimes, after it cools, I’ll add in some pickled jalpenos (1/4 cup or so) for added flavor
I make this the night before, put it in Tupperware, and take it to work with me in a cooler. I eat this throughout the course of the day whenever I feel a bit hungry, which is probably about every 2 hours or so. I usually have a little left over that I take home and eat later that evening for a snack.
I usually eat dinner with the family, that being a small sized portion of whatever my wife made. If she didn’t make anything, I usually don’t eat anything else for the day.
On weight training days (Mon/Wed/Fri) I get a low-carb protein smoothie after working out.
And that’s pretty much what I eat Monday – Friday every goddam week. I also drink 1/2 a cup of coffee pretty much every day, black during the week, with cream and honey on the weekend. No soda ever, not even diet. Water mostly, and 1-2 dark beers or glasses of red wine 3-5 times a week. Yes, I drink beer or wine almost every night.
On the weekends, I pretty much eat whatever I want, but I don’t overeat. I might make a batch of CBO or I might not. Moderation is the guiding principle. Two pieces of pizza is fine. Four? Do you really need four? I still do my best to stay away from simple carbs though. You should too, all the time.
