Added sugars contribute additional calories and zero nutrients to food. Over the past 30 years, Americans have continued to consume more and more sugar in their diets, and the result has been an obesity epidemic. Reducing sugar cuts calories and can improve heart health and help control weight.
Although there is no Recommended Daily Allowance for sugar, the American Heart Association recommends that adult males consume no more than 37.5 grams and that adult females consume no more than 25 grams. Just to put that in perspective, one 12 ounce can of Coke as 39 grams of sugar.
So my answer to “how much sugar is too much” is any REFINED sugar is too much.
